Sustainable Wallingford will launch the new edition of its free Buy Local directory on Saturday, 28 April in Wallingford Market Place. Starting at 10am and running throughout the morning, the launch will be an opportunity to sample some excellent locally-produced food and drink, discover more about Sustainable Wallingford and, of course, pick up a copy of the new directory. Buy Local 2007 is the work of Sustainable Wallingford’s Local Sourcing Group, whose spokesperson is Dot Cussens. She said: “Every time we buy something we make choices which affect local businesses, the environment and our community. There are many advantages in buying from local producers. You and the goods do not travel so far, thus reducing pollution, road congestion and energy use. You can ask how the goods have been produced, what are the ingredients of a cake or pie or whether vegetables have been sprayed. You can also say what you really like about a product and so have an effect on the quality of the things you buy and give useful feedback (and encouragement!) to the seller.”
The directory first came out in 2005 and proved a great success. Buy Local 2007 will also list suppliers of food, drink, plants and crafts made and sold locally. It will include a new section on sustainable living, plus useful information about the environmental benefits of local production and tips on growing your own food. 8,000 copies of the directory will be produced for distribution in and around Wallingford.
