RAF BENSON ENGINEER EARNS FLIGHT SAFETY COMMENDATION IN IRAQ

An Engineer employed on 28 (Army Co-operation) Squadron at RAF Benson has received a Flight Safety Commendation while serving in Iraq. Senior Aircraftsman Kenny May is currently serving with 1419Flt, a Merlin MK3 Helicopter detachment from 28 (AC) Squadron, as part of the Joint Helicopter Force (Iraq) in Basrah.

After arriving into theatre as part of 1419 Merlin Flight, Senior Aircraftsman (SAC) May was tasked within 36 hours to service aircraft at night on an unlit and unfamiliar operational dispersal, using a harness and head torch and working under operational pressures. Attached to the aircraft rotor head by his harness and in darkness, SAC May noticed a small chip on the ceramic coating covering of part of the helicopter called the ‘Yellow Pitch Change Bearing’. Aware of the flight safety implications, he immediately sought assistance from the senior Mechanical Supervisor. Further investigation into the problem revealed that a large amount of ceramic coating was missing. Unchecked, this could have ultimately resulted in the bearing being pulled from the pitch change mechanism leading to a catastrophic loss of aircraft control. SAC May’s meticulous attention to detail under trying conditions was exemplary and potentially averted the loss of a crew and a valuable aircraft. For his diligence and prompt action, SAC May was recommended for a Commander Joint Helicopter Command’s Flight Safety award. The certificate was presented to him on Christmas Day by the Commanding Officer of the Joint Helicopter Force (Iraq), Wing Commander Rich Luck, who also happens to be the Officer Commanding 28(AC) Sqn at RAF Benson.
